Nicotine salts are the form of nicotine in tobacco leaves. Unlike nicotine commonly used in electronic fumes, these salts are not just nicotine; they are compounds containing nicotine and other organic components. They may combine with one or more chemicals in tobacco leaves, but the result is the same - forming a more stable molecule.
The nicotine form commonly used in electronic fumes is called "free alkali" nicotine. This form of nicotine is not dependent on any other substance and is generally considered preferable for steam and other uses because it is a "volatile" (i.e., evaporative) form of nicotine.
In fact, the tobacco industry has made great efforts to increase the number of "free base" nicotine in cigarettes. This is the main factor contributing to Marlboro's success, because Philip Morris is the pioneer of this successful method.
The company that provides nicotine salt fumes claims that nicotine salt is more satisfying than traditional free alkali nicotine fumes, but the tobacco industry seems to disagree and concludes the opposite. Is there anything missing from such companies? Is nicotine a gimmick?
JUUL's Pax Laboratory carried out some experiments. Through experiments with many different formulations, their researchers found that specific nicotine salts were actually more effective than free alkali nicotine fumes. They called the discovery "unexpected" and confirmed it by tests of blood nicotine levels obtained by users.
The key component is benzoic acid, which is added to control the formation of nicotine salts in electronic fume. By considering the reaction at evaporation temperature, they can produce a smoke oil containing nicotine salt. When inhaled, it still gives you a lot of nicotine available.
By adding benzoic acid, the vapor pH value of nicotine salt fume decreases and the inhalation is not so severe, but chemical reactions occur during the inhalation of vapor, thus maintaining a high content of free alkali nicotine. This means that you can easily inhale high nicotine fume. If you've tried JUUL, the nicotine strength of 59 mg/mL, you can prove this for yourself.
The fact is that tobacco companies are doing the right thing, but the reality is not as simple as "free alkali is better". Through more experiments and consideration of evaporation conditions (generally at lower temperatures), Pax Laboratory has found a way to make nicotine salt a viable evaporation method, which can be said to be a better one.
Although the word "dependence" is better suited to talking about addiction than smoking, nicotine salt does become addictive in everyday (or less precise) language. Other components of cigarettes do increase tobacco addiction, but nicotine itself remains the main addictive component of smoking. In short, nicotine salt fume is as addictive as free alkali nicotine fume, and if it causes a sharp rise in nicotine levels in the blood (Pax data show it does), it may actually be more addictive than ordinary e-fume.
Compared with traditional nicotine salts, organic nicotine salts are a step closer. Compared with nicotine itself, organic nicotine salts have much less mucosal irritation to the mouth or throat. Organic nicotine salts decompose into nicotine and corresponding acids when they enter the human body. Compared with nicotine salts of the same quality, the amount of nicotine entering the human body is actually less. Nicotine salts also have the weight of acid. This nicotine salt can generally be added to 40mg-50mg.
